"Good Times" - "The Baby" Episode Is An Excellent Reference Of How Much America (And Black Americans) Have Changed In The Area Of "Black Child Birth" And Have Not Changed About "Welfare"

I originally said I was going to keep this post in draft mode until I purchase the "Good Times" episode and embedded the video.

The narrative of the episode "The Baby" was like experiencing a time warp.

Picture this:

  • A Black female character pops up out of nowhere for this episode
  • She is a married, mother of 4 existing children and she gets pregnant by her husband again
  • They are too poor to keep this additional child so the woman plots on DOING THE "UNTHINKABLE"
  • What is the UNTHINKABLE?......................................
    • NO NO NO, not ABORTION - as would be the message today
    • Back in the mid 1970's when "Good Times" was running the writers chose to GIVE THE BABY UP FOR ADOPTION
STOP RIGHT THERE!!!

In watching the two matriarchal females - Florida and Wilona, expressing concern for what this woman might do with her baby - I can think OF NO PRESENT DAY SHOWS that would have presented these nuances.  ("It is your baby.  Girl you MUST do the right thing and carry it to term' We'll help your through it.")

Of course the writers created an artificial mini drama, teasing the audience that the choice was "Abortion".  We know that abortion was legal during that time in America.

DOES ENTERTAINMENT REFLECT THE POPULAR WILL OR DICTATE IT?

I say both.
